₹50 lakh crore in equity funds, and the expense ratio bill

The Assets under Custody (AUC) of Equity #MutualFunds in India have crossed ₹50 lakh crore in October. In just two years, the industry asset base has doubled!

As we know, every Mutual Fund comes with an #ExpenseRatio.
At the lower spectrum, we have direct Index Funds with an expense ratio of around 0.01%, which can go up to 2.25% for active regular funds!

Taking an average of 1%, that’s a staggering ₹50,000 crore in annual expenses!
No wonder everyone, from legacy giants like Reliance to new-age players like Navi and Zerodha, wants a piece of the AMC business.

A major part of this growth is coming from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.
Thanks to campaigns like “Mutual Funds Sahi Hai”, the rise of #Finfluencers, and the ease of digital investing, awareness has soared.
But there’s a catch: Investors from smaller towns often rely on advisors or distributors, and end up buying #RegularMF, which comes with higher expense ratios.
Everyone wins - except the investor!

A Curious Observation
Despite muted #NIFTY returns, the AUC has kept growing.
The most probable reason is that the distributors would have advised the investors to move money from one Fund to another, in the hope that the next one would work better! This exercise keeps assets intact and commissions flowing.

Can We Avoid MF Expenses Completely?
Not entirely. Expense ratios cover costs like fund management, legal, audit, marketing, and distributor commissions.
However, as fund sizes grow and the industry matures, economies of scale should reduce these costs over time. #SEBI is pushing for some steps in that direction; hopefully, we should feel the impact soon!

How to Save on MF Expenses
- Go Passive: Choose Nifty Index Funds; expense ratios are minimal.
- Go Direct: Always opt for Direct Plans instead of Regular ones, you save ~1%, which compounds massively over the long term!
