A right to disconnect, when our jobs are our identities
Recently, #RightToDisconnect Bill was presented in the #Parliament.
But the real question is, can we truly disconnect from work anymore?
Somewhere along the way, our jobs became our identities.
At every social event, the default question remains: “Where do you work?”
And the bigger problem?
Years of chasing deadlines, promotions, and deliverables have left many with no #hobbies, no side interests, and no #AlternateIdentity. And now they feel “too old” or “too busy” to pick one.
When people talk to me about #FIRE (Financially Independent Retire Early), they want to continue working in the stressful environment, since their biggest fear is “What will I do with all my time?”!
Maybe the real disconnect we need is from equating our entire self-worth to our job titles.
Some Fun facts:
- About a decade or two back this bill would be irrelevant, Why? Remember Laptops used to be luxury, only #Desktops used to be issued! “Home” actually meant #home!
- Also, it's a Private Member’s Bill and till date, none have ever been passed!
So while the bill may spark debate, the real change has to come from us asking: Who am I when I’m not working?
