“But my MFD provides a lot of service”
“But my #MFD provides a lot of service.”
That was the argument a friend made when we were discussing my recent post on Direct vs Regular #MutualFunds.
He and his wife continue with Regular plans because their MFD takes care of everything related to Mutual funds, as well as other banking and investment-related work, like depositing cheques, filling forms, visiting offices, etc.
So I asked them a simple question:
“Suppose your MF portfolio is ₹1 crore.
If you are paying 1% extra for Regular plans, how much are you paying for these services every year?”
Silence.
₹1 lakh. Every year.
And suddenly, the conversation became interesting.
The question isn't whether the MFD provides a service.
The question is: Is that service worth ₹1 lakh every year?
Especially when most MF transactions, KYC, banking, and paperwork can now be done online.
Many of us started investing through a friend, relative, or trusted MFD years ago.
The portfolio grew.
The relationship grew.
And now, so has the commission.
Moving everything to Direct plans may make financial sense, but could also strain a relationship that has been built over years.
So there can be a middle path:
New investments → Direct plans.
Existing Regular investments → Review gradually.
Continue paying for services that genuinely add value.
But don't keep paying simply because:
“We've always done it this way.”
