Why I recommend index funds, not trading
“Why do you always recommend #IndexMutualFunds and not #trading strategies?” I get this question more often than you’d imagine!
Most people say, “Index gives just 10%. I can easily beat that by trading!”

My answer is always the same: “I’m happy with my 10%, and you should be too.”
Then come the rebuttals: “It’s not that hard, just read charts, do some financial analysis, and enter/exit at the right time. Profit guaranteed!”
And my counter: “If it were that easy, why isn’t everyone doing it successfully?”
Silence usually follows!
The recent news around #JaneStreet, one of the largest quant trading firms globally, reinforces my belief:
There are massive institutional players in the market, and whether we like it or not, they move the markets in ways most retail investors can’t predict, let alone compete with.
Sometimes, great news doesn’t move a stock.
Sometimes, no news at all makes a stock shoot up.
The classic explanation? “Markets are forward-looking, already factored in, whatnot.”!
#SEBI itself reported sometime back that most retail investors lose money in active trading.
So here’s my view: For most retail investors, Index Mutual Funds offer:
- Low cost
- Low emotional stress
- Low manipulation
- Decent long-term returns
They may not give you astronomical returns, but they offer something far more important: consistency and simplicity.
Always remember, the amount of capital you deploy matters way more than the alpha you chase.
So focus on:
- Saving more
- Investing regularly
- Avoiding FOMO trades
