Will GST on health insurance finally go?
Will the GST Council Finally Deliver a Diwali Gift for Health Insurance Policyholders? 🎇💼

After much debate, the Group of Ministers (GoM) has proposed exempting GST on premiums for health insurance policies covering up to ₹5 lakh for individuals (excluding senior citizens), premiums above ₹5 lakh would continue to attract 18% GST. Senior citizens might get a full exemption, irrespective of the coverage! 🙌
The final decision is expected at the GST Council meeting at the month's end.
The Big Question: Will the Govt Sacrifice ₹8,300 Cr in GST Revenue?
Currently, the government rakes in around ₹8,300 crore annually from GST on health insurance premiums. If the exemption is granted, this revenue stream would shrink, but it might lead to a massive uptick in insurance coverage. With reduced costs, more people could opt for health insurance, shielding themselves from financial ruin during medical emergencies.
As Nikhil Kamath aptly said, "Most Indians are just one hospitalization away from bankruptcy." With such a dire reality, could a GST exemption open the door to greater financial security for millions?
Will Insurers Pass the Savings On?
If this exemption comes through, another key question arises: Will insurance providers pass the benefit to policyholders or inflate premiums to improve their margins? At the same time, the insurance product itself needs simplification, with its labyrinth of clauses, co-limits, and exclusions. Even for well-informed individuals, navigating health insurance policies remains an overwhelming task.
What About the Markets?
With this news out, we should see a rally in insurance and healthcare stocks on Monday. If we don't, market analysts can easily say, “This change was already factored into the share prices.” Remember markets are irrational in nature😉.
What’s your take—should the government bite the bullet and exempt GST on health insurance premiums? Will this move boost coverage, or is it just a temporary relief?
