Would you take a card just because it's lifetime free?
Would you apply for a new #CreditCard just because it’s “#LifetimeFree”?
A friend recently asked me about a new credit card.
Knowing the cards he already held, I told him, “You don’t really need this one.”
His answer? “But it’s LTF, what’s the harm in having one more?”
That’s the trap. In finance, “free” often comes with hidden costs and “Lifetime Free” doesn’t always mean #risk-free.
Here are some of the reasons why saying yes to every LTF card can backfire:
- Hidden fine print - Is it really free? Read the fine print again!
- The management problem - Multiple cards = multiple due dates. A forgotten ₹500 bill can lead to late fees, penalties, and a #CreditScore dent
- Credit profile risk - Banks don’t just see usage; they see exposure too. Too many open credit lines can make you look over-leveraged, even if you’ve never defaulted. Some PSU banks already decline new applications on this basis!
- Illusion of spending power - More cards give a psychological “buffer.” But easy access to credit often nudges overspending, especially with #reward programs pushing you to “spend more to earn more.”
- Real value vs vanity value - Do you really need a 7th card that duplicates the benefits of the 3 you already use? Or is it just the thrill of collecting “freebies”?
For most users, 2–3 cards are more than sufficient. Managing them flawlessly matters more than juggling 8–10 “free” ones!
How many credit cards do you hold? Would keep applying for CCs if those are offered as LTF?
