A retiree, ₹50 lakh and a premium credit card
Craze for #CreditCards is unbelievable these days, thanks to #finfluencers!
Recently, a #Retiree reached out asking for suggestions on a premium credit card.
He was willing to invest 50 lakhs of his retirement corpus through a bank’s Mutual Fund platform, if they could offer him a premium card in return.
His logic was simple:
“I have to invest the money anyway. If I can get free stays, flights, and other perks along with it, why not?”
Fair enough.
But here’s the catch that not many talk about.
The investment via the bank's platform will be in Regular #MutualFunds instead of Direct Funds!
The difference between the two 1% extra commission every year, meaning on 50 lakhs, nearly Rs 50,000 quietly goes out every year to the bank! At this income, the bank would happily give any credit card in its portfolio!
Now, to recover that amount through credit card rewards, one would need:
- high spending
- optimized usage
- milestone tracking
- reward calculations
- constant monitoring
Essentially, a part-time job to feel “smart” about spending money.
This is the problem with modern finance content.
People are slowly getting convinced that financial tools like Credit Cards can make them rich!
Sometimes the smartest financial move is not maximizing rewards, it is minimizing complexity.
In retirement years, especially, peace of mind compounds better than reward points.
If a card is genuinely needed, a simple #RuPay Credit Card that works on #UPI rails is more than enough for regular use. But keep the transaction limits in check and keep the card safe.
Have you done anything like this, just to get an upgrade or a new Credit Card?
