Buying insurance is a nightmare? It doesn't have to be
Recently, I caught up with a friend who was frustrated about how cumbersome and expensive buying #insurance can be.

Her: Buying insurance is such a nightmare—it’s complicated and costly!
Me: True, Health insurance is notoriously complex and needs simplification.
Her: No, no, I mean #TermInsurance!
Me: Oh? But term insurance is one of the simplest insurance products out there!
Then she explained her concerns, and it became clear why it felt overwhelming.
Her: There are so many add-ons to choose from—what should be the cover amount, the tenure, and whether I should pay premiums upfront or annually. The choices are endless!
Me: Let’s take it step by step. Why do you think you need term insurance?
Her: To cover my liabilities and support my family in case of any unforeseen situation.
Me: Perfect! Now, what are your liabilities?
She thought about it for a moment and identified a rough figure.
Me: Great! How long do you expect to have these liabilities and dependents?
Her: Hmm, probably until I retire. So, are you saying I don’t need to take a policy that lasts till I’m 70?
Me: Exactly! Once your liabilities and dependent needs are sorted, there’s no need to extend the policy beyond that.
Her: Makes sense. But what about the premium payment? I worry about job instability. I’d prefer to pay off the premiums within 5 years and then not worry about it.
Me: That’s understandable, but consider this: A ₹1 crore policy may seem like a large amount today, but 20 years down the line, it will feel much smaller due to inflation. By then, your savings might be sufficient to cover liabilities and support dependents, so you can forego the policy if needed. Paying all premiums upfront within 5 years might unnecessarily strain your finances now. Annual premiums give you flexibility.
Her: Got it. But what about all those add-ons?
Me: Keep it simple. A plain vanilla term insurance policy is the most cost-effective. Add-ons can significantly increase premiums without offering proportionate value.
The next day, she called back. After revisiting her term insurance needs based on our discussion, she adjusted her policy and found her premiums drastically reduced! She thanked me and confidently went ahead with the purchase.
While considering buying Term Insurance do keep the following points in mind:
- Cover Amount: Base it on your liabilities and family’s needs.
- Tenure: Align it with the period you’ll have dependents and liabilities, not your entire lifespan.
- Premiums: Choose flexibility over lump-sum payments to avoid unnecessary financial strain.
- Add-ons: Stick to the basics—fancy riders often inflate costs without delivering proportionate benefits.
