Can EPFO keep paying 8.25% when equities give 5%?
With equities delivering only ~5% annual returns, can #EPFO maintain an 8.25% interest rate?
The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) invests 5-15% of fresh accretions into equities. As per the latest FY24 data, 9.49% of its corpus is invested in equities. However, with subdued equity returns this year, EPFO may struggle to generate the alpha that previously enabled higher payouts.
Adding to the Pressure is the potential Lower Debt Returns, recently RBI has reduced the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) and Repo rates!
There is also an increased number of withdrawal claims filed, resulting in a higher outflow of funds!

Though the murmurs on the ground indicate the government would try to match last year’s 8.25% rate, the feasibility remains uncertain.
When will the #EPF Interest Be Finalized?
The Labour Ministry determines the interest rate based on the fund’s performance while keeping a small surplus for future needs. Typical timeline:
- June-July: Labour Ministry internal assessment and Interest rate proposal
- Post that Finance Ministry audit & approval
- August-September: Public announcement
- Diwali Season: Final credit to accounts (book entry, no interest loss)
The key challenge? Balancing fiscal prudence while keeping salaried employees happy. There are over 65 million EPF subscribers in the country, forming a considerable vote bank!
Can EPFO sustain 8.25% returns, I doubt it, what do you think?
