TCS lays off 12,000: why it's bigger than 2%

#TCS to lay off 12,000 employees - but is it just 2% of its 600,000+ workforce?

But as always Devil lies in the Details -
The layoffs are focused on middle and senior management.
Typically, each mid-level manager oversees 10–15 junior employees.
That suggests TCS has around 50,000 people in this band.
So, firing 12,000 from that pool!
That’s over 20% of the leadership layer, a far more serious restructuring than the headline suggests.

Why is this happening?
With slowed hiring at junior levels, there's naturally less need for managers.
Tools powered by automation and #GenAI mean that fewer managers can handle larger teams just as efficiently.

Broader impact on the #economy?
Middle and senior managers are the real spending engine of a consumer economy. Cutbacks at this level will affect:
- Real estate demand
- Automobile sales
- Electronics, travel, luxury services
The ripple effect across consumption-led sectors is real.

How can individuals prepare #financially? Here are a few practical steps:
- Revisit your #EmergencyFund - Aim for at least 9 months of expenses, parked in liquid, safe options (don’t chase returns here).
- Avoid new #debt - Now is not the time to book that flashy car or sign up for EMIs. Preserve flexibility.
- Review your #spending - Trim non-essential expenses temporarily. Prioritize building a financial cushion.

The future may be uncertain, but with strong financial planning, we can face tough times with confidence, not fear.

And do check my earlier post on some of the financial tools available in case of Layoffs, that provide some buffer!
