Filing ITR is not for the faint-hearted
Filing #ITR is not for the faint-hearted. But after two weekends of trial, error, and frustration, I finally filed #IncomeTax Returns for myself and my better half. And it honestly feels like winning an impossible battle! 🎉

Some pain points that definitely need immediate attention:
🔹 Data mismatch – Salary breakups like NPS deductions should auto-populate. The IT Dept already has Form 16 data, so why not use it?
🔹 Schedule confusion – Every time you log off, some schedules vanish, and some irrelevant ones get added. Inconsistency only adds to the chaos.
🔹 Validation gaps – Website UI and Excel formats don’t match. Errors aren’t flagged upfront, but only at the final stage. Date format is the biggest mystery! A sample data in the first row would help.
🔹 Clickable errors (secret hack) – On the final validation page, the error messages are clickable (though the cursor won’t show it). Thanks to my friend Varun Katiyar, I learned that one can click and directly jump to the correction page. Helped me solve the puzzle faster!
Now the good part 👇
✅ I filed my return at 6 pm, got a processing confirmation by 10 pm, and by morning, the refund was in my bank! #Flash!!
⚠️ But here’s the catch: faster processing doesn’t mean final closure. Returns can be reopened years later for scrutiny. And the department can knock with hefty fines!
So, faster refunds only serve the vanity matrix for the department and our honourable finance minister! They can go to the media and claim, 90% returns are processed within a day!
Why didn’t I use a third-party portal?
Last week, I met a few friends, who told me: “If even you, who knows taxation better than us, finds this hard, we’ll never try ourselves. We’ll go directly to third-party services.”
That pushed me to complete it myself. Struggle, yes, but also satisfaction! At least now, I can ask others to reach out to me if they are stuck with tax filing 😉
How was your ITR filing journey this year? Did you manage yourself, or did you take the help of portals/consultants?
