I don't track expenses. I track savings

“How do you track your #Expenses?”
This is a question I am often asked. My answer usually surprises people.
I don’t track expenses, I track #Savings!

Here’s why!
🔹 The Strategy – I know how much I need to invest every month to stay on track for my #FinancialGoals. The moment I park that money aside, whatever is left is free for expenses. Simple.
🔹 Why not track expenses? – Because it often creates unnecessary friction.
“You spent too much on shopping, no shopping for 2 months!”
“We’re eating out too often, let’s cut back!”
But here’s the funny part, while categories keep changing (shopping one month, eating out the next, maybe travel next month), the overall expense amount usually stays more or less the same. Tracking each line item only adds stress without much benefit.

What if savings aren’t enough?
That’s the real question to solve. Either:
- Reduce expenses, or
- Revisit your goals.

Sometimes the problem isn’t #overspending, but setting goals that don’t match your reality. Just because someone else bought a new car or went on a European vacation doesn’t mean you must also aim for the same.

Everyone’s journey is different. The key is to keep moving in the right direction, not to match someone else’s milestones.

So instead of tracking every coffee and cab ride, I ask myself just one thing each month: “Did I save and invest what I had planned for my goals?”
If yes, the rest takes care of itself.

Do you track expenses or savings? Would love to hear your approach!
