Why I don't upgrade my phone every year
The other day, my carpool partner asked me why I don’t upgrade my phone.
Her logic was simple: “Apple just launched #iPhone17. Mine looks rough, and I can easily opt for no-cost #EMI during the upcoming sale, without hurting my existing #financial commitments!”
She wasn’t wrong. My phone is 4+ years old, rough around the edges, thanks to my rough handling, but it still gives me a full day’s battery life, screen intact, and works just fine. For me, the reasons to hold on are clear:
✅ Avoid unnecessary #spending
✅ Reduce #eWaste
✅ Focus on #utility, not “latest and greatest”
But what struck me was the mindset behind her suggestion.
- #SalesPsychology: Discounts make us feel we’re saving money, when in reality we’re spending on something we didn’t need in the first place.
- No-cost #EMI trap: It sounds harmless, but it normalizes debt for consumption, not for value creation.
- #Consumerism Bug: Social pressure + #FOMO keeps us chasing the next shiny thing, often at the cost of long-term savings.
By the time her drop point came, she had explained to me -
- How No-cost EMIs work, helped her to upgrade gadgets, almost every year
- How to buy more and save more during the festival ecom sales
- What are the must-have credit cards before the sales start
Made me wonder, in the name of looking cool, ease, we are screwing our financials! Sadly, even the government is promoting the 'Upgrade' culture, we can't blame the common folks, falling into the trap!
So, how is your buying behaviour? Do you buy for show or utility?
