“Great returns, but I don't trust the fund now”

“The fund gave me great returns, but I don’t trust it now.”
That’s what a friend told me when she called last week, thanking me for recommending a #MutualFund that delivered solid gains.
She’s now expecting a bonus. Naturally, she wants to reinvest.
But, not in the same fund!
Why?- Its recent performance is dull. I’m scouting for a better one
That’s the problem with active funds. Last year’s hero can be this year’s sidekick!

So, what’s the alternative? #IndexFunds.
They don’t promise outperformance.
They don’t chase market timing.
They mirror the index — quietly and efficiently.

Our chat quickly turned into a mini crash course:
Q: How do I pick an index fund?
A: Choose your benchmark (Nifty 50, Sensex, Next 50, etc.), then focus on:
- Low expense ratio
- Minimal tracking error (the closer to the index, the better)
- Large AUM (stability during market moves)

Q: Why does tracking error matter?
A: Because even index funds can underperform, or overperform! Both are worrisome. Remember, the best Index fund mirrors the index most closely.

Q: Should I split the amount across AMCs to reduce risk?
A: With index funds, the fund manager has almost no room to drift.
Your only real risks are operational (e.g., tracking error or fund closure), not decision-based.

Q: But index funds will never beat the market even in the long run!
A: True, but guess what? Most active funds don’t either. And you pay higher fees for the chance that they might.”

Index funds don’t offer thrill. They offer peace of mind.
No constant monitoring. No FOMO. Just steady, market-matching growth.

So, what do you think she would do?
Chase the next “hero” again or invest in a boring index fund?
