Money Minus Noise

Mutual funds & investing

How do you know if your mutual fund is actually doing well?

“How do I know whether my #MutualFund is actually performing well?”
Recently, while discussing markets with a friend, she said:
“Markets are down, so naturally my Mutual Funds are also down.”

That's understandable, but I asked her a different question:
“Are your funds falling less than the market or more than the market?”
Perplexed, she asked: “What do you mean?”

That’s when I explained one of the most ignored concepts in Mutual Fund investing: #Benchmark Comparison
Every Mutual Fund has a benchmark index.
For example:
- Large cap funds → Nifty 50 / Sensex
- Midcap funds → Nifty Midcap
- Small-cap funds → Small-cap indices

The real question is NOT: “Is my fund positive or negative?”
The real question is: “Is my fund performing better than its benchmark?”

She quickly checked, and the result was shocking!
Her funds were falling MORE than the benchmark!
Worse: These were Active Regular Funds!
Meaning, she was paying Fund manager fees as well as Distributor/advisor commissions for underperformance!!!

This is where many investors get trapped
In bull markets, almost every fund looks brilliant.
But during corrections, the real quality gets exposed.

If an Active fund:
- Cannot outperform in the long run
- Cannot provide downside protection
- Still charges higher fees
Then one needs to ask, what exactly am I paying for?

My suggestion to her: Explore, Index Direct Funds.
Benefits:
- Lower expense ratios
- No distributor commissions
- No fund manager selection anxiety
- Returns mirror benchmark performance closely
No drama. No “Top Fund of the Year” chasing.
No constant portfolio reshuffling every 6 months 😄

Many investors track Portfolio value.
Very few tracks whether the fund is even doing its job!
Returns without context are misleading.

Are you investing in Active Regular Funds?
Have you checked how your funds are performing against their benchmark, especially during market corrections?
