Money Minus Noise

Mutual funds & investing

“I have a lump sum. Where should I invest?”

“I have a #LumpSum. Where should I invest?” A friend recently asked.
Before suggesting anything, I asked him a simple question:
“What % of your total #portfolio is this lump sum?”

He was puzzled. "Most #FinancialAdvisors jump straight into technical jargon like #SIP vs #STP, cost averaging, and whatnot. No one asks me this."
I explained:
- If that lump sum is 50% of your total portfolio, it deserves a very different risk assessment and strategy.
- But if it's just 5–10%, you can afford to be more aggressive.

The mistake most people make?
They focus on the absolute amount, say “5 lakhs” without realizing its relative weight in their entire investment ecosystem.

In investing, context isn’t just helpful, it’s essential!
A number is just a number until you view it in proportion.

So next time you think of investing a lump sum, ask not just where, but how big a slice of your financial pie it is.
