No, UPI MDR won't break the mutual fund industry
“The #UPI charge that will break the #MutualFund industry!”
That's the headline an RIA recently used.

And honestly, on the face of it, the concern sounds valid.
0.02% #MDR may seem tiny.
But when an #Indexfund charges an expense ratio of just 0.06%–0.20%, adding another cost certainly sounds significant.
Except…
Does this MDR actually apply to every mutual fund investment?
That's where the story gets interesting.
Yes, the new framework introduces 0.02% MDR on eligible capital-market UPI transactions, including mutual fund payments, capped at ₹300 per transaction.
But there is an important distinction:
UPI AutoPay / recurring mandates don't attract the prescribed MDR.
And that's particularly relevant for #SIP investors.
SIPs accounted for approximately 60% of equity and equity-hybrid fund flows in FY25, according to CRISIL Intelligence.
So let's look at what actually gets impacted.
SIP through UPI AutoPay → Zero MDR
One-time/lumpsum UPI investment → 0.02%, capped at ₹300
Now, will this create some additional cost for AMCs?
Absolutely. But the impact would be minuscule.
It applies only to a very small segment of investments: one-time/Lump-Sum investments via UPI.
By the way, the UPI investment limit in a day for Mutual Funds is ₹5 lakhs.
Thus, bulk investors would anyway be choosing some other payment mode, and charges for that are already built into the Expense Ratio!
Would this small additional expense pass on to the investors?
AMCs may absorb some of it.
Some may pass a part of it to the investors by increasing the expense ratio.
But the impact would be negligible!
Definitely, this new charge won't break the mutual fund industry!
#MoneyMinusNoise
The charge is real.
The extrapolation is the problem.
This is why I keep saying:
Don't just read the headline. Understand what actually changed.
Were you worried that UPI MDR would significantly increase mutual fund expense ratios?
Hopefully, there is a little less noise around that concern now.
