UPI at petrol pumps: ₹5 flat, not 0.4%
Whether a #UPI transaction at a #PetrolPump is of ₹2,000 or ₹20,000, the #MDR remains flat ₹5, not 0.4% as advertised by #SocialMedia #influencers.

So what are the potential transactions impacted?
2-wheelers:
₹2,000 in one go, rare for a 2-wheeler!
Cars:
Many people refuel for ₹1,000–₹2,000. Those doing larger fills will cross the threshold. For many private car owners, these larger fills may be occasional.
Autos, taxis & smaller commercial vehicles:
Many refuel based on daily cash flow rather than filling the entire tank.
Trucks & buses:
This is where the impact could be more meaningful. Larger vehicles frequently buy fuel in bulk, so a larger share of their transactions can cross ₹2,000. But again, most of the organized players fill via Fuel Cards, issued by their operators, so those will be out.
Now let's look at the #Economics.
Petrol pumps currently earn roughly ₹3.14/litre + a percentage component on Petrol sales, while diesel is roughly ₹2.33/litre + a percentage component under the current commission structure.
In Delhi's May 2026 price build-up, the average dealer commission was about ₹4.39/litre for petrol and ₹3.02/litre for diesel.
And after salaries, electricity, maintenance, working capital, and other operating costs, the actual net margin is much thinner, with industry estimates putting it around 1% of sales.
So yes, ₹5 is a cost.
But will a ₹5 MDR justify the kind of hue and cry we are seeing?
Let's put it in perspective.
₹5 on a ₹2,000 transaction = 0.25%
₹5 on a ₹20,000 transaction = 0.025%
Yet social media keeps talking about 0.4% MDR on fuel!
Wonder WHY! Maybe controversy sells better!
Is #Cash really the solution?
More cash to count.
More cash to secure.
More cash to deposit.
More reconciliation.
And the occasional fake note.
