NPCI delays the 30% UPI cap, again
š” National Payments Corporation Of India (NPCI) Extends the 30% #UPI Volume Cap DeadlineāAgain!
In a respite to industry leaders PhonePe and #GPay, #NPCI has decided to delay the 30% UPI volume cap by 2 years to Dec 31st 2026!

Despite the rise of several new UPI apps over the years, the duopoly remains unshaken, with these giants controlling ~80%+ of the market share. With the stack order remaining unchanged, and without a clear SOP to enforce the cap, NPCI seems to have no option but to extend the deadline.
How do we foster meaningful #competition in the UPI ecosystem, to break the duopoly?
Some of the Strategies to Shift the Balance š
1ļøā£ Unique Use Cases -
For example, CRED (Ranked 5th in Nov) has carved a niche by focusing on #CreditCard payments. This has enabled it to grow volumes, but the most important part is the Value of transactions done (Ranked 4th in terms of value)
Similarly, Navi (Ranked 5th in Nov) integrates loan repayment into its app, linking UPI transaction growth directly to the expansion of its loan book
2ļøā£ Bank-Powered UPI Apps
Banks who have been almost inactive in the past, are now gearing up and making their apps more powerful! Apps by ICICI, Axis, and HDFC consistently feature in the top 10 UPI players. Customers prefer bank apps, due to trust, and benefit from faster dispute resolution, with fewer intermediaries in a transaction
3ļøā£ The Return of #Cashbacks
Remember the early UPI days, when even a ā¹100 transaction could earn ā¹1,000 cashback? While most apps have pulled back on incentives due to no clear monetization path, super.money (Ranked 7th in Nov) bucks the trend. Even with small cashback, it has been able to make consumers switch! Mehhh!!!
4ļøā£ Opening the Door to New Players
WhatsApp, the default messaging app for millions, now has no restrictions on scaling its UPI operations. However, will its massive user base translate into meaningful competition? The halo effect may be overrated, not many apps have been able to replicate success across sectors.

š¤ Whatās Next?
Breaking the duopoly in UPI is no small feat, but competition is essential for innovation and customer-centric solutions. Whether through specialization, incentives, or new entrants, the industry needs creative strategies to diversify market share.
What other initiatives do you think can help foster healthy competition in the UPI ecosystem?
