Should salaried employees worry about advance tax?

Should Salaried Employees worry about the #AdvanceTax?
Recently, a friend asked me this question. His logic was simple:
“I’m a salaried employee. My employer already deducts #TDS. Why should I worry about advance tax?”

Many people believe the same.
But the reality is, almost every income we earn is taxable.
And some of these incomes don’t have sufficient TDS deducted, which means the tax liability remains.

Let’s look at some common examples.
1️⃣ Savings Account Interest
Interest earned on savings accounts is taxable.
Under the old tax regime, you get a ₹10,000 deduction under Section 80TTA.
Under the new tax regime, there is no deduction, so the entire interest becomes taxable.
2️⃣ Fixed Deposit / Recurring Deposit Interest
Many people believe that once the bank deducts TDS, their tax obligation is over.
Not really. FD interest must still be added on an 'accrual basis' to your total income and taxed as per your slab rate.
3️⃣ EPF Contributions Above ₹2.5 Lakh
If your employee's contribution to EPF exceeds ₹2.5 lakh in a year, the interest earned on the excess contribution becomes taxable for life!
4️⃣ IPO Listing Gains
Sold that IPO on listing day? Those are short-term capital gains, taxed at 20%.
5️⃣ Long-Term Equity Gains
For long-term equity investments, gains above ₹1.25 lakh in a year are taxed at 12.5%.
These are some of the most common income sources for salaried investors.
With the Annual Information Statement (AIS) now in place, it has become extremely difficult to miss reporting such income.

Now comes the important part.
If your additional tax liability (after TDS) exceeds ₹10,000 in a financial year, you are liable to pay advance tax.
The final installment must be paid before March 15, or be ready to pay a penalty later!

Advance tax can be paid easily through the Income Tax portal.
Just remember to select:
• Correct Assessment Year (AY 2026–27)
• Type of Payment – Advance Tax

Short of funds to pay taxes, thankfully, I haven't seen any startup offering loans for this category yet! But the #Government happily accepts #CreditCards!
But payment gateways may charge around ~1% fee, and most credit cards don’t give reward points for tax payments, so evaluate the cost before choosing that option.
Also, avoid waiting until the last moment, since the portal can slow down due to heavy traffic.

So, have you calculated your additional tax liability and paid your advance tax yet?
