Will tax filing ever get simpler?
Every #tax filing season, I ask myself:
Will the process be simpler this time?
Sadly, the answer remains the same every year!
The government has all my financial details, like:
- My salary.
- My bank interest.
- My mutual funds.
- My stock transactions.
- My credit card spending.
- My foreign stock holdings.
Yes, foreign investments are increasingly finding their way into #AIS!
Yet, when I file my #ITR, it feels like I'm appearing for an exam!
- Miss one entry?
- Wrong schedule?
- Incorrect reporting?
- Congratulations. Here's a notice that could come even after 3 years of filing!
What surprises me is this:
If private companies can make tax filing feel simple, why can't the government?
Platforms like #ClearTax and #INDmoney have shown that a better experience is possible.
Imagine this:
The government pre-fills every piece of information it already has.
The taxpayer simply reviews it and answers one question:
"Do you agree with the information above?"
That's it.
Instead, we've built a system where the government has most of the data, but the entire responsibility remains with the taxpayer.
And for people paying lakhs in taxes every year, at least the Government can provide free assisted tax filing.
Sometimes I wonder if tax filing in India is less about paying taxes and more about proving your innocence.
Maybe the government is doing all this to generate employment and keep things complicated, so that people need to be dependent on someone else!
Are you facing similar challenges, or have you happily outsourced this exercise to others?
