Would you ditch your car if office parking cost money?
đźš— Would You Ditch Your #Car If Your Company Starts Charging for #Parking?
Recently, #BengaluruTrafficPolice proposed something quite bold: Companies should start charging employees for using office parking.

Their estimate?
This move alone could reduce traffic on ORR by nearly 30%.
Now, let’s be honest. Most people don’t drive because they love sitting in traffic.
They use personal vehicles for Safety, Convenience, and Predictability.
Earlier, there was a proposal to levy a #congestion #tax on ORR, now it’s paid parking at offices.
Feels like every few months, a new “idea” comes u,p but the root problem remains untouched.
So instead of all this policy theatre, why can’t we focus on actual, workable solutions?
Here’s what would make a real difference -
- Promote #Carpooling - Incentivise it for both companies and employees. Provide priority parking, reduce toll fees, or tie it to CSR/ESG metrics.
- Ban New Commercial Construction on ORR (at least until Metro is operational) - A simple rule: no more pressure on an already choked corridor. Let the infrastructure catch up.
- Run Mini-Buses Into Interior Areas - First and last-mile connectivity is the biggest barrier to public transport adoption. Reliable 12–20 seater shuttles across neighbourhoods can massively reduce car dependency.
Charging for parking might look like a quick fix, but real traffic solutions need system-level thinking, not penalties.
Would you actually stop driving if parking at work became paid, or would it just feel like another “tax” without alternatives?
