A finfluencer's ₹3 crore FIRE plan doesn't add up

Recently, a self-proclaimed founder of a wealth management company, who seems more of a #Finfluencer posted about how a couple could achieve #FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) with a corpus of ₹3 crore to sustain a lifestyle costing ₹2 lakh per month.

As expected, the post was high on #hopium and clicked well with readers. After all, who doesn’t love sweet lies?
Curious, I commented on the post, poking holes in the overly simplistic narrative. The result? I got blocked. (Welcome to LinkedIn world, where everything has to be hunky-dory! 🙃)

But let’s get real for a moment. Here’s why a ₹3 crore corpus is woefully inadequate to sustain such a lifestyle:
1. Unrealistic Expectations on #Returns -
Most finfluencers assume your corpus will earn 12% annually. That’s essentially asking you to park all your money in #equities. Sound risky? Equities are volatile and parking the entire corpus in them is financially suicidal.
2. Ignoring #Taxation
Have you ever noticed how taxation is conveniently forgotten in these examples? Even Long-term capital gains on equities are taxed, and other investment instruments come with their tax implications, impacting overall returns!
3. The Time Value of Money - #Inflation
They preach loudly about ₹1 crore losing its value in 10 years due to inflation but conveniently ignore how expenses also escalate. So they would keep the withdrawal rate constant or way below the real inflation
4. Overly Optimistic #Expense Assumptions
Sure, some costs may reduce as you age (less pub-hopping or fewer vacations), but others—like healthcare—rise significantly. Without factoring in evolving needs, these plans collapse under scrutiny

The reality is, that achieving FIRE for such a lifestyle requires a much larger corpus—at least ₹7 crore—with proper asset allocation across equity, debt, and other instruments. A diversified portfolio not only reduces risk but also ensures stability in unpredictable times.
But here’s the catch: ₹7 crore feels far less achievable than ₹3 crore. So, people cling to the illusion. We all hate bitter truths, right?

With rising stress in work-life, more and more professionals are looking towards FIRE. Remember FIRE isn’t a magic number, it’s a journey that requires disciplined saving, strategic investing, and continuous learning.
Diversifying investments helps provide balanced growth and safety.
Factor in realistic inflation, taxes, and changing expenses in your projections.
Plan for contingencies—because life is not an Excel sheet!
