Money Minus Noise

FIRE & retirement

FIRE at 40 with 30x expenses. Is that enough?

Recently, an ex-colleague called me. “Bro, at 40… I’ve achieved #FIRE (Financially Independent, Retire Early).”
I congratulated him and asked about the numbers.
“30x corpus. I’m done working for '#money'.”

That’s when I paused, 30x is solid, but is it enough?
With rising #healthcare costs and increasing life expectancy, living beyond 75 is no longer rare.
That means potentially 35+ years of post-retirement life.
One major event, and the buffer can evaporate faster than expected!

His response? “In that case, I’ll cut down my #lifestyle expenses.”
Sounds logical.
But here’s the uncomfortable truth:
Cutting down #expenses is far harder than upgrading them.
Once you’re used to a lifestyle, downgrading feels like a loss!
There’s another layer people underestimate: Is your partner aligned?
FIRE is not an individual milestone. It’s a household decision.
If one person wants #minimalism and the other wants comfort, the math won’t fail first. The psychology will!

My view?
30x is Lean FIRE; if you want breathing room, aim for at least 40–45x.
That buffer buys:
• Flexibility
• Healthcare shocks protection
• Market volatility cushion
• Peace of mind

Before chasing early retirement, do this:
✔ Audit expenses, lifestyle creep is real
✔ Ensure savings rate faster than expense growth
✔ Model worst-case scenarios, not best-case ones
✔ Align deeply with your partner

FIRE is powerful.
It’s a long-term behavioral commitment.

Would you retire at 30x? Or build a bigger cushion?
