How many people actually pay for airport lounges?
Have you ever wondered how many flyers actually pay to enter an #AirportLounge?
During a recent visit to one of the busiest airports in the country, I struck up a conversation with the lounge receptionist to understand usage patterns.
This is what I learned:
~2,500 passengers use the lounge every single day
Barely 1% pay for entry
99% enter via complimentary #CreditCard benefits
#Rupay cards have made the queues longer!
Curious, I asked what happens when flyers discover their cards are not eligible.
Solo travellers → simply walk away
Families → more likely to pay (convenience > cost)
And that cost isn’t small.
💰 Pay-at-entry lounge prices: Can go as high as ₹2,000–₹2,500!
For an already overcrowded lounge, many prefer to step out instead
Here’s another interesting number.
🏦 What banks actually pay lounges: Roughly ₹600–₹1,200 per visit
Varies by airport and terminal
Which means:
Lounges make money on volume
Banks lose money on heavy users
That's why we see most cards now have either restricted the benefit or linked it with minimum spends!
Just outside the lounge were three credit card kiosks, aggressively selling cards with one key pitch:
“Complimentary airport lounge access.”
Marketing sells aspiration. Usage exposes economics.
