IDFC FIRST's zero forex markup changes the card game
IDFC FIRST Bank is changing the rules in the #CreditCard industry by offering Zero #Forex Markup across its credit card portfolio (including lifetime free cards)!

And this could have an impact on multiple players in the market.
First, let's understand what we're actually saving.
Most credit cards charge around 3.5% forex markup + 18% GST on foreign-currency transactions.
Spend ₹1 lakh abroad, and that can mean roughly ₹4,130 extra!
Frequent international travellers, overseas shoppers, and people paying for software/services in foreign currency are impacted by these charges!
So who gets impacted?
1. Forex Cards
They were once the obvious choice for international travel.
But they come with their own friction, like loading charges, opaque exchange-rate spreads, cash withdrawal fees, and charges when you move the money back.
Their biggest advantage was predictability.
Zero-forex credit cards make that proposition less compelling.
2. Fintech Zero-Forex Cards
#Scapia and #UNI helped popularise the idea of zero-forex credit cards.
But they're fintech-led propositions, with cards issued through partner banks (Federal and Yes). Sadly, both of them have restrictions on issuing multiple cards, meaning if one holds an existing card from these banks, they can't opt for a Scapia or UNI card!
If a mainstream bank takes the same proposition directly to its customers, market dynamics would change.
3. Other Banks
This could be the bigger disruption.
Why pay 2–3.5%+ GST on international spends when another bank is willing to charge zero?
We should see a shift in credit card issuance, with IDFC seeing better growth.
Pro Tip -
There's another unusual feature worth knowing.
ATM withdrawals
IDFC FIRST charges just ₹199 + GST per cash withdrawal, but unlike most credit cards, it currently doesn't charge interest on ATM cash withdrawals until the payment due date.
So, instead of carrying cash abroad or paying astronomical fees to the money exchanger at the airport, directly head to the ATM at the airport!
During #GFF2026, there was a lot of discussion on reducing cross-border transaction costs; this initiative by the bank would definitely help in saving a lot of cost by the consumers.
#MoneyMinusNoise
For years, we looked for the “best” option to save on Forex charges; I believe we have the answer now. Tough for the competitors to ignore.
It would be interesting to see how the growth numbers would stack up.
