Money Minus Noise

Tax & ITR

Is this tax tweet true? Option A

A friend WhatsApped me this tweet today and asked: “Is this true?”

Image shared with this post

It reminded me of the questions we used to get in school:
A. Only Sentence A is correct
B. Only Sentence B is correct
C. Both are correct
D. Both are wrong

So, what's the answer here?
Option A. 😄

The first sentence is correct.
But the second sentence is factually wrong.
And this is exactly where the noise starts.

Under the new tax regime, the ₹12 lakh rebate is available for normal income taxed at slab rates.
That can include things like:
• Salary
• Rental income
• FD interest
• Savings account interest
• Other income taxed at slab rates

But income taxed at special rates doesn't get this benefit.
For example: Capital gains from shares or mutual funds are taxed under special provisions.

So simply saying “Only your salary up to ₹12 lakh is tax-free” is incorrect.

And there is another interesting nuance for salaried taxpayers:
Because of the ₹75,000 standard deduction, a salaried individual can potentially have a gross salary of ₹12.75 lakh and still have zero tax, subject to the applicable conditions.

Influencers optimize for Eyeballs and not for the real facts!
Sadly, most people don't have the time to go through the facts and believe more in WhatsApp University!
