Money Minus Noise

UPI & payments

The UPI notice outside the tea shop

“UPI payments will be charged extra due to MDR charges.”
I saw a similar notice outside the tea shop near my office.

I asked the owner:
“What's this?”
“MDR is coming from next month. If you pay by UPI, you have to pay more.”

So I asked him a simple question:
“Does anyone even pay you more than ₹2,000 in a single UPI transaction?”
He laughed.
“Why are you joking? I sell tea, coffee, cigarettes, and other small stuff. My bill rarely crosses ₹500.”

Exactly, that's why there is no impact on you due to the MDR charges.

The new framework does introduce MDR on specified merchant UPI transactions only above ₹2,000 from October 15.
Small merchants covered under the P2PM zero-MDR framework, with up to ₹1 lakh/month in UPI receipts, remain exempt.

But then came the interesting part.
He told me he had been hearing all kinds of things on Instagram and WhatsApp about UPI charges from next month.

And this is where the noise starts.
Influencers, to gain eyeballs, spread misinformation, creating unnecessary panic in the market. When someone argues with facts, they just vanish!

So next time you see a similar board outside a grocery store, panipuri stall, or a puncture shop, please do spread the right information.
UPI is an amazing product, and it remains free for the majority!
