Money Minus Noise

UPI & payments

UPI charges are back, and so are the finfluencers

#UPI charges are back in the headlines.

And once again...#Finfluencers are having a party.
"UPI won't be free anymore."
"Government has started charging #MDR."
"Every UPI payment will become expensive."
"Government has killed free payments under US pressure."

Sounds scary.

The only problem?
Most of these posts are jumping to conclusions.
Let's remove the noise.

The Bill passed in Parliament allows the government to prescribe an MDR framework for UPI.
It doesn't mean every UPI transaction will suddenly attract charges.

There's a big difference between:
"The government can levy MDR"
and
"Every consumer will start paying MDR."

Look at the closest example we already have.
#RuPay #CreditCard on UPI rails, MDR already exists there!

Yet, you don't pay extra every time you buy a ₹20 tea or ₹100 groceries.
MDR is limited to big merchants and transactions over ₹2000.

So why assume every UPI payment will suddenly become chargeable?

Another interesting fact.
NPCI's own data shows that the average UPI transaction across most merchant categories is well below ₹2,000.
Only a handful of categories have higher average ticket sizes.

Which means the examples dominating social media - tea, milk, vegetables, auto rides - are probably the least likely to be impacted.

Will MDR come for some transactions in the future?
Will it apply to everyone?

We simply don't know yet.

But #influencers are busy spreading financial misinformation.
