Who invests ₹10 crore in a 19% “risky” bond?
"Who in his right mind would invest ₹10 crore in such a 'Risky' #Bond?"
A friend asked me this after reading about Shapoorji Pallonji's Zero Coupon NCDs offering an indicative yield of around 19%.

He followed it up with,
"At that interest rate, the bond has to be junk."
We spent the next 30 minutes discussing something much more important than the bond itself.
#Risk is #Personal.
Yes, a 19% yield tells us the market is pricing in significant risks.
The issue is reportedly unrated.
The SP Group has a leveraged balance sheet.
The underlying security also comes with liquidity constraints.
All valid concerns.
But here's the question that really matters.
Risky for whom?
A ₹10 crore investment sounds insane, if your entire portfolio is ₹20 crore!
The same ₹10 crore may be just a 2% allocation, if your portfolio is ₹500 crore!
The investment hasn't changed.
The investor has.
That's the part #SocialMedia often ignores.
We love giving blanket advice.
Every investment should be evaluated in the context of:
- Your net worth
- Your cash flows
- Your financial goals
- Your ability to absorb losses
- Your existing portfolio
The same product can be reckless for one person and perfectly sensible for another.
That's why in #PersonalFinance the better question is,
"What's the best investment for me?"
#MoneyMinusNoise
Risk doesn't live inside a product.
Risk lives in the person buying it.
