Use the market fall to move from Regular to Direct plans

The market correction may have created an opportunity for some #MutualFund investors.
Not to buy more, but to clean up what they already own!

Over the years, many investors have accumulated Mutual Funds in #RegularPlans.
Later, they discover #DirectPlans have lower expenses, around 1%.

They want to move.
But then comes the problem: Selling the Regular Plan can trigger #CapitalGains #Tax.

So they postpone it.
And continue paying the higher #ExpenseRatio year after year.

Here's where a market correction can help.
If the NAV has fallen, the embedded capital gain on some holdings may have reduced.
That can create an opportunity to redeem some units while making better use of the ₹1.25 lakh annual #LTCG exemption available for eligible equity-oriented investments.
The money can then be reinvested into the Direct Plan.

It's not a magic tax trick.
And a market fall doesn't automatically make switching worthwhile.

You need to look at: Purchase price → Current value → LTCG/STCG → Exit load → Other gains/losses → Future cost savings.
And one more complication: Grandfathering of Profits before 31st Jan 2018!

The fall in the market provides an excellent opportunity to clean up the Portfolio.
Don't just react to the noise in the market.
Use the market conditions to improve your financial plan.

If you have been holding Regular Mutual Funds and have been postponing the move to Direct Plans because of the tax impact, feel free to reach out. We can look at the numbers and understand whether this could be a good window to make the transition.
