Why bonus money is easier to spend: mental accounting

Ever noticed how spending ₹10,000 from a #Bonus feels easier than spending ₹10,000 from your monthly #salary?
Even though both have the same value.
This behavior has a name: #MentalAccounting.

Popularized by #NobelPrize-winning economist #RichardThaler, the idea is simple:
We don't treat all money equally.
Instead, our brains silently create different buckets.
• Salary → earned, valuable, protected
• Bonus → extra, spendable
• Trading profits → found money, easier to risk

That's why many traders become more aggressive after a winning streak.
Not necessarily because their analysis has improved.
But because prior gains often feel less painful to lose.

Behavioral economists call this the #HouseMoneyEffect.

The same tendency can show up outside investing, too.
People may splurge a #TaxRefund more easily than their regular income.
They may spend a bonus faster than their monthly salary.
Or they may take bigger risks after a profitable trade.

The interesting part?
Money doesn't know where it came from.
₹10,000 is still ₹10,000.
But our brains assign different values to it based on the story we attach to it.
And that's where many financial mistakes begin.

Because successful investing isn't just about understanding markets.
It's also about understanding yourself.
