Why financial literacy matters: the tax rules people miss
This is why #FinancialLiteracy is important!
Every year, millions of Indians discover #tax rules they never knew existed.
And unfortunately, the Income Tax Department accepts ignorance as an explanation exactly 0% of the time.

In this case, two important tax rules are at play:
1. Income Clubbing
Many people believe investing in a minor child's name reduces their tax burden. It doesn't!
The income gets clubbed back with the parent's income and taxed accordingly.
2. Taxation on Accrual Basis
This one surprises even seasoned investors.
For FDs (Fixed Deposits) and RDs (Recurring Deposits), taxation doesn't necessarily wait for maturity.
Income Tax Department taxes based on accrued income during the year; you're expected to:
- Calculate it.
- Report it.
- Pay taxes on it.
Which means you can owe tax on money that hasn't hit your bank account yet!
Fair or unfair is a separate debate.
Knowing the rules is an important part of managing money.
This is also why taxation should be one of the first things you evaluate before investing, not the last!
Most people ask:
"What's the interest rate?"
Very few ask:
"How will this interest be taxed?"
That's the difference between investing and investing intelligently.
Debt Mutual Funds (deferred taxation) and Arbitrage Funds (equity taxation) are alternatives some investors consider, but they come with their own Risks!
Remember, Returns are advertised boldly. Taxes, no one talks about them upfront!
