A senior citizen's retirement portfolio, and the hidden risk
Recently, a #SeniorCitizen approached me to review his #retirement portfolio.
At first glance, everything looked impressive: a healthy corpus, reasonable asset allocation, and enough money to sustain a comfortable retirement for many years.
But as always, the devil lies in the details.
Nearly 50% of his debt portfolio was parked in #FixedDeposits of a #SmallFinanceBank.
When I asked why, the answer was simple and familiar: higher #interest rates.
This is a trend I’ve increasingly noticed among retirees.
With multiple #fintech platforms promoting FDs, creating one is just a click away. Many senior citizens are parking large sums in Small Finance Banks, often without fully understanding the #risk concentration involved.
When I tried explaining the risks, the response was equally common:
“#RBI is there. They won’t let depositors lose money.”
That’s when the reality check becomes uncomfortable.
✔️ The #DICGC insurance protects deposits only up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank — not the entire FD amount.
✔️ Anything beyond that is fully exposed if the bank runs into trouble.
✔️ High interest rates exist because the risk is higher, not because it’s free money.
At retirement, the priority must shift decisively from returns to safety.
That extra 1% of interest can put 100% of the principal at risk, a trade-off many underestimate until it’s too late.
We’ve already seen issues in the banking system, prominent ones were, PMC Bank crisis, the Yes Bank AT1 bond write-offs! But we all love to ignore such news, wishing it won't happen to me!
These weren’t theoretical risks; they were real losses for real people.
👉 All debt instruments are NOT the same, even if they come from a “bank.”
👉 Diversification in debt is as important as diversification in equity.
Sadly, when returns look attractive, risk often gets ignored.
And in retirement, that’s a mistake one can least afford.
