Is FIRE a Western concept? Not anymore

đź’° Is #FIRE (Financially Independent, Retire Early) a Western Concept?
If someone had asked me this question a decade ago, I would’ve said yes, but not anymore.
A decade back, #layoffs were rare, job security was strong, and most professionals had a clear long-term career path.
Fast forward to today, and things have changed drastically.
- We now live in an era of “Hire and Fire.” And this isn’t just limited to startups anymore; even cash-rich companies and legacy brands are letting people go.
- Employee loyalty is no longer valued, and no one is truly safe, be it a fresher, a middle manager, or even a CXO.
- To make matters worse, #ageism has quietly crept into the system. Let’s face it, 60 is no longer the retirement age. Many professionals are being pushed out of the formal workforce much earlier.

Given such uncertainty, FIRE is no longer a Western concept.
It’s a financial survival strategy, and the sooner we embrace it, the better prepared we’ll be.
So, where should one begin?
- Step 1: Build an #EmergencyFund
Set aside money to cover at least 6 months of expenses, keep it in a safe, liquid asset. Remember: with an emergency fund, Return of Capital is more important than Return on Capital.
- Step 2: Know Your #FIRENumber
Calculate your annual expenses and target a minimum 30x of that amount as your long-term corpus. At first, the number may feel astronomical, but success begins with acknowledging reality.
Adopting the mindset of investing before spending can help achieve this number faster!

If needed, engage a financial coach or advisor who can act as a mirror and keep you on track.
In today’s volatile job market, financial independence isn’t about luxury; it’s about peace of mind.
