Need a personal loan? Consider a gold loan first

Whenever someone reaches out to me for advice on #PersonalLoans, my first question is always, Can you avoid taking the loan altogether? If the answer is no, my next suggestion is simple: Consider a #GoldLoan over a personal loan.

Gold has always held a special place in Indian households. While we often see it as a symbol of wealth and security, we rarely think of leveraging it during financial need. Here’s why gold loans might be a smarter choice:
- Lower Interest Rates:
Personal loans, being unsecured, come with higher interest rates, 10%+ is the norm. The worst are the app-based loans, which can charge more than 15% too! In contrast, gold loans are secured against your gold jewelry, offering much lower rates of 8-10%, saving you significantly on interest costs.
- Simplified Processing:
The process for availing a gold loan is simple and quick, with most banks and NBFCs offering same-day disbursals, typically 60-65% of the Gold value.

As Indians become more credit-hungry, there are signs we are also becoming more financially literate on what loans work better for us. A better parameter to judge the stress in the economy would be the default rate of Gold loans. Gold has a lot of sentimental value for households, thus the borrowers would work hard to get the asset back. If gold loan defaults surge, it’s a red flag signaling #EconomicDistress at the grassroots level. This should prompt swift action from policymakers and financial institutions.
