When the rupee falls, our choices matter too
Every time the #Rupee falls, the first reaction is: 👉 “What is the #Government doing?”
Though the policies and global factors majorly drive the direction, there’s also a smaller, less discussed part:
👉 our everyday choices!!

We are a country of 140+ Crore:
- Imports a large part of its #fuel
- Buys significant amounts of #gold
- Increasingly prefers #imported products
- Loves to go abroad on #vacations
Individually, these seem like small decisions.
Collectively, they translate into:
👉 Higher demand for foreign currency
👉 More pressure on the Rupee
Does this mean individuals control the currency? Of course not.
Does this mean we have no role to play? Not really.
Maybe the question should also be:
- Can we be more mindful of import-heavy consumption?
One of the easiest things we can do is avoid upgrading our electronic gadgets for the next 6 months!
- Can savings shift from physical gold to productive assets?
We love Gold, but can we look to exchange our gold jewelry, which we will never wear, when we buy the new one! #Tanishq bought out an amazing campaign around this during Diwali last year. Side note, Jewelry is not an investment, it's more of a consumption. If you want to invest, buy Bullions!
- Can small changes (like reduced fuel usage) add up at scale?
Small actions like #Carpooling, usage of #PublicTransport wherever possible, can reduce fuel usage. Maybe for some time, we can ditch #QCom and walk to the nearest grocery store to buy our groceries! All these small steps can reduce fuel consumption!
- Can we explore Local destinations rather than visiting abroad?
India has almost every type of terrain, from snow-clad mountains to Beaches, from Deserts to Rainforests. Can we explore local destinations, rather than vacations abroad?
No single action of an individual will “fix” the Rupee.
But as a strong society of 140+ crore, let's use our numbers to our strength. Together, we have the power to make a change; it all depends on how we want to play around, as a house that loves to keep questioning the government or loves to take collective accountability!
What actions are you planning to take during the current crisis?
