Closing a PPF account at a PSU bank: easier than feared

Recently, an old college mate reached out. His Public Provident Fund (#PPF) account was maturing, and he needed help with the withdrawal process.

Since the account was with the biggest Public Sector Bank (#PSB), he was worried about: Multiple visits & Delays!

I explained the process. And added one important #caution!
When a large amount hits your account…
There’s a high chance the banker will try to “help you #invest it.”
And that’s where things get tricky.

The uncomfortable reality is that with increasing #CrossSelling targets for the bankers:
- Products are often pushed… not recommended
- Suitability takes a backseat, with Targets taking the front seat

We’ve all seen cases where:
High-risk equity funds, products like Unit Linked Insurance Plan, are sold to #SeniorCitizens without understanding their needs or Risk profile

Even the Reserve Bank of India (#RBI) has flagged such practices.
Yet, they continue!

For many people, the banker = the most trusted financial advisor!
And this belief can be expensive!

So how do you protect yourself?
1. Don’t just ask for returns. Ask for risks as well!
Returns are highlighted. Risks are usually hidden in fine print.
2. Take your time
It’s okay to delay a decision by a few weeks.
It’s not okay to rush into the wrong one.
3. Say NO when needed
A firm “No” is better than years of regret.
4. Understand before you invest
If the Advisor can’t simply explain the product, you probably shouldn’t invest in it.
5. Get a second opinion
From a trusted advisor or your own research.

The biggest financial mistakes don’t happen due to a lack of options.
They happen due to: Pressure + Trust + Urgency

At times, protecting your money is more important than growing it fast!
