Would you pay a small fee for UPI?

Would you pay a Small Fee for #UPI Transactions if it meant more Innovation and Better Service? 🤔

Imagine this: a small ₹3 increase in platform fees on popular food delivery apps can drive up profits by ₹25 crore per month! Now, consider if UPI apps were allowed to charge say just 10 paise per transaction—what could that mean for the industry?
If the government gave the go-ahead for a minor fee, here’s the potential:
PhonePe could bring in ₹70 crore per month, Google Pay around ₹50 crore, and Paytm around ₹10 crore.
Even if someone made 100 UPI transactions in a month, that’s just ₹10 extra! Due to increased platform fees, Zomato or Swiggy don't expect any negative order volumes!

This revenue boost could completely change the game, opening up new paths for competition and innovation in the digital payment space. Today, most UPI apps focus on offering loans, insurance, mutual funds, etc, with UPI a mere gateway to onboard customers rather than a core product. This could change if the UPI itself offers a sustainable income source.

Allowing fees on transactions would also reduce the burden on government subsidies (PhonePe alone received over ₹500 crore last year as part of a digital payment subsidy). These funds can be diverted toward tech infrastructure growth, much needed for the growing digital economy.

UPI has become the backbone of digital payments, but to ensure long-term sustainability, a balance is needed. If players can charge minimal fees, it can attract new entrants with innovative solutions and also help reduce the dominance of individual players, aligning with the government’s goal of limiting single players' market share to less than 30%.

Would you be open to paying a small fee per transaction if it meant better services and more options?
