Gold loans are up 50%. Should RBI worry?
#Gold Loans are Surging, making #RBI worried?
Gold loans in India have skyrocketed by over 50%, far outpacing overall loan growth.
What’s driving this Gold Rush?
- Rising Gold Prices – With higher valuations, borrowers can now pledge the same gold for a bigger loan. Many are even foreclosing on older loans to take new ones!
- Faster & Cheaper Loans – Being secured, gold loans are processed quickly and come with lower interest rates compared to #PersonalLoans.
- Easy Access – With banks and #fintechs aggressively promoting gold loans, one can apply from the comfort of their home. More people now understand their advantages over unsecured loans.
- Risk Weights – After RBI raised risk weights for unsecured loans, financial institutions are pivoting towards safer, asset-backed lending.

So, Why Is RBI Concerned?
- Gold Price Volatility – If prices crash, borrowers may have to pledge more gold or repay the difference. If they fail, banks will auction the gold—something we saw NBFCs doing a few years ago.
- #CreditScore Impact – Due to any reason if a person defaults, the bank may be able to recover the money through auction, but it damages the borrower's credit history, making future borrowing tougher from formal channels. Most Gold loans are taken by the Bottom of the Pyramid population, RBI won't like them to be kept away from formal lending channels
- #Political Fallout – Gold is deeply emotional in Indian households. If defaults rise, opposition parties could raise concerns about distress-driven auctions, creating unnecessary turmoil.
How Is RBI Responding?
- Standardized gold valuation rules across branches to ensure fair appraisals
- Restricting fintechs from handling gold collection, storage and weighing
- Mandatory borrower notifications before any gold auctions.
- Assessing repayment ability, not just the gold pledged, to reduce default chances
Would these measures slow down gold loan growth? Maybe. But with the advantages gold loans offer over personal loans, this trend is likely here to stay! Have you ever opted for a Gold loan, how has been your experience?
