“I love my work. Why worry about FIRE?”
"I love the work I do. Why should I even worry about #FIRE?"
An ex-colleague recently made this statement.
He added:
"I am among the best performers in my company. I get good ratings, timely promotions, and genuinely enjoy my work. I will probably work till #retirement age."
I heard him patiently and asked:
"Have you seen the #layoffs that happened over the last few years?"
Even highly profitable companies have laid off employees.
Do we really believe all those who lost their jobs were poor performers?
Silence.
#MoneyMinusNoise.
One of the biggest misconceptions in corporate life is:
"If I perform well, my job is secure."
Performance certainly helps.
But layoffs are often driven by factors beyond an individual's control:
- business cycles
- restructuring
- automation
- changing skill requirements
- cost-cutting initiatives
The reality is that even excellent employees can become victims of circumstances. And finding the next opportunity is not always easy.
Many experienced professionals have spent months searching for suitable roles despite having impressive track records.
This is exactly where FIRE becomes relevant.
Not because everyone wants to retire early, but everyone needs a backup plan!
FIRE is not a plan to stop working.
It is a plan to stop working for Money!
If you love your work, continue doing it.
If you want to work until 60, 65, or even longer, that's perfectly fine.
But wouldn't it feel better knowing that if something unexpected happened tomorrow, you and your family would be financially secure?
The purpose of FIRE is not to escape work.
It is to create options in an increasingly unpredictable world.
Because in a #VUCA world, #hope is not a backup plan, #Financial preparedness is.
I help professionals build a path toward #FinancialIndependence through better decisions around spending, investing, taxation, and lifestyle choices.
