Rent on credit cards: from hot category to dead end
Paying #Rent via #CreditCards was once one of the hottest categories in the #fintech world.
Then people optimized it a little too well, or I should say misused it 😉

What started as #convenience slowly became a way to manufacture spending, chase #rewards, and unlock #milestones.
Eventually, compliance requirements tightened, and many players exited or restricted the category.
Now players like CRED and PhonePe are preparing to re-enter with stronger checks and balances.
So what's changing?
• Stricter #KYC for both tenant and landlord
• #PAN collection and verification
• Rental agreement validation
Interestingly, this category was large enough that exiting it reportedly impacted revenues. PhonePe, in its updated draft red herring prospectus (UDRHP), disclosed that it suffered a revenue hit of around Rs 1,250 crore after exiting the rent payments business.
What are the #costs associated with paying rent using CCs through third-party platforms:
• Processing fees from apps - generally 1-2%
• Additional charges from card issuers - generally 1%
• Reward exclusions on most cards
Then why do people still use it?
Two reasons.
First, some cards still count these spends toward #milestone benefits!
Second, there are genuine use cases, temporary #CashFlow needs, #salary timing mismatches, or a desire for short-term #liquidity.
But before paying 2–3% extra, ask yourself:
Are you solving a cash-flow problem or creating one?
Because collecting rewards while paying extra fees might not be financially prudent. So check your maths and don't follow a random #finfluencer on #Instagram!
Have you ever paid rent using a credit card?
Did the convenience justify the extra cost?
