He got a salary hike. My advice wasn't to invest it

He got a salary hike. My advice wasn't to invest it.

Recently, a friend reached out for some advice.
He had received a salary hike and was wondering:
“Should I increase my investments immediately, or do it after the festival season?”

The typical financial advice would be:
“Start investing the additional amount from Day 1”

I told him something different.
Enjoy some of it.

Festival season is around the corner.
Maybe replace the 3-year-old phone you've been carrying.
Take the family on the vacation they've been asking for.
Do something you've been postponing for a while, like that upskilling course!

Because with all the noise around investing every extra rupee, we sometimes forget one simple thing:
'We are building Wealth to live a better Life. We shouldn't forget to live it'

But there is an important point to note.
Don't make these expenses ad hoc. Plan for them.

If the phone will cost ₹X and the family vacation ₹Y, set that money aside from the additional surplus.
Then when the credit-card bill arrives, there is no panic.
You don't need to sell investments.
You don't need to borrow.
You don't need to wonder where the money will come from.
The money is already available to pay the bill.

The problem isn't spending the salary hike.
The problem is spending it without a plan.

And there was one more important piece of advice:
Every salary hike should increase your savings at a much higher rate.
Don't let lifestyle inflation quietly consume 100% of the hike.

So instead of deciding everything on Day 1, suggested we reconnect after 2 months.

Let's see what the actual additional surplus looks like.
Then decide what to do with it.

Because personal finance doesn't have to be:
Invest. Invest. Invest!

It can be:
Save! Invest! Spend! Enjoy! Repeat!

The right balance will be different for everyone.
That's the point.

#MoneyMinusNoise
Don't blindly follow what everyone says.
Understand your situation.
Plan the money.
Then decide!
Build wealth. But don't postpone living until you become wealthy.
